Karate
- 2008-01-09: First time since August.
- 2008-01-12: Got Seisan back on track, and started to remember Seiuchin.
- 2008-01-14: Finally nailed Seiuchin again.
- 2008-07-31: Lunchtime casual workout with Rich; we reviewed my charts, fighting techniques, and katas. I even made it through seiuchin after a few tries.
Rock Climbing
- 2008-01-06: Went to Metro Rock in MA with Grace. Did a 5.7 very solidly (though I found it pretty challenging), a 5.6, a 5.5-5.6 that ended in rubbing the Buddha's tummy, and failed on another 5.7. (As of now, the only time I've done harder than 5.7 succesfully is a very short 5.8 at Mission Cliffs.)
- 2008-01-24: Did an easy 5.5, and then a 5.6 with an overhang at the end that intimidated me but was actually easy. Started a tougher 5.8; decided to try a 5.7 instead, but had to leave first.
- 2008-02-18: Did a longish 5.5 in the cylinder. Then failed to do the short 5.8, failed a 5.5 in the cylinder, failed the short 5.6, and finally managed the short 5.4. Ouch.
- 2008-02-20: Did a top-rope 5.5 and three V0- problems. Failed to start on a 5.6, but whatever, I'm getting back in shape.
- 2008-02-26: Did the short 5.6, and a 5.6 near the balcony very very slowly.
Did 4 V0s.
- 2008-02-28: Did four V0- problems. And some slackline.
- 2008-03-02: Did four V0 problems.
On the balcony, did the 5.7 and the 5.8 (my white whale!).
- 2008-03-05: I did 10 V0 problems! Including every one I tried!
- 2008-03-07: One 5.6 (easy, except I skipped the first hold). A bunch of V0s.
- 2008-03-11: Tried a bunch of V0's; some of them were definitely harder.
- 2008-03-13: Did a few V0s (new problems!) and belayed Mike a bit. My elbow hurts!
- 2008-03-23: A bunch of V0s, a V0+, and... my first V1!
- 2008-03-25: Redid Sunday's V1 and did a second V1, as well as a bunch of V0s.
- 2008-03-27: Did a V1 and a V0, and a 5.8 (with an arete, neat) and a 5.7.
- 2008-03-30: Became a member! Did a V1 that I'd already done, and gave another V1 a shot for a very long time.
- 2008-04-01: Did a bunch of new V0s and a V0 I hadn't managed before, as well as a V1 that seemed shockingly easy. Banged my head on the same V1 as last time for a while without getting it.
- 2008-04-04: Did about 4 V1s and a few V0s.
- 2008-04-06: Did a few new V1s, including a V1+, and some new V0s. Gave a V2 a shot and got a couple of moves in!
- 2008-04-09: Did two V1s and a V0+ that had been frustrating me for a while, as well as redoing a few V1s.
- 2008-04-12: Did my first three V2s!
- 2008-04-15: Did two more V2s and an overhang V0, and redid some.
- 2008-04-19: Problems that I did for the first time: two V2s and a crazy V1+ where as far as I can tell you have to ignore half the holds and just mantle straight up.
- 2008-04-22: A bunch of new problems were set in the right-hand side today. Did a bunch of new V0 and V1s.
- 2008-04-24: Did a few V0 and V1s, then top-roped for the first time in ages. I did a 5.8 without much trouble (and I've never done a 5.8 other than the short one at MC before), and was about to try my first 5.9... and my shoelaces broke.
- 2008-04-27: For, like, ten minutes, after way too long buying shoelaces, relacing my shoe, realizing I had the wrong lace, buying another one, relacing, etc. La Sportiva Mythos is a great shoe but damn is a pain to lace. Redid a V2, at least.
- 2008-04-29: Went with Kelsey. Did a bit of bouldering (an old V2, a newish V0, etc), then hit up top-roping for the first time at MC in ages, doing a full-length 5.8 and my first 5.9.
- 2008-05-01: New: did a V1+ and a huge-overhang V0, plus a couple unlabeled (!) problems and some old V2s.
- 2008-05-16: First time back from Europe. They redid 40ish problems in the chamber; I did all the V0s (~8) and three of the V1s.
- 2008-05-17: Did some new V1s; tried some (hard!) new V1s for a while.
- 2008-05-20: Redid some V1s and a V2; did an overhangy V0 that I hadn't found before, and banged my head on the same V1 as the last two times for a while.
- 2008-05-22: Did four or five V1s at Planet Granite.
- 2008-05-26: A good day! First I finished off the V1 in the chamber that I'd been having trouble with, as well as one that I failed on for about a week a month ago. Then switched over to top-roping with Michael et al; did a 5.9 without much trouble, got stuck up a 5.10a near the top, and then finally completed my first 5.10a!
- 2008-05-28: New problems in the central part; did all the V0s and two tough V1s.
- 2008-06-03: Top-roping (with Natalie); did a couple of 5.9s and got stuck near the top of the 5.10a that I got stuck on last time, and on a 5.9 by the bouldering area.
- 2008-06-05: Did a few V1s until my elbow hurt.
- 2008-06-08: Did a bunch of V1s.
- 2008-06-10: Tried and tried and tried on a V1 and a V2 for a while. Redid another V1 to make myself feel like I'd accomplished something.
- 2008-06-13: Did a V2 and a bunch of V1s.
- 2008-06-15: Did some V1s, V0s, etc. Not much new.
- 2008-06-18: Got a V1 that had been plaguing me for weeks, and got a little farther on a tough V2. Also did a few new V0s and worked on some new V1s.
- 2008-06-19: For the first time in a month, actually nailed a V2 at Mission Cliffs. Two of them, in fact: the one I've been trying for over a week, and a new one. Plus a V1 that I couldn't get yesterday. Yay!
- 2008-06-21: Went out to Exit 38 outside Seattle with Maggie for my first outdoor climbing. Specifically, Deception Crags, Write-off wall. Warmed up by top-roping a 5.4 and a 5.5, then did a 5.9. Then I lead-belayed Maggie (for the first time!) up the 5.5. Then we did a 5.6 and a 5.7 with her leading, me top-roping, then her top-roping to clean up. Finally, we top-roped this other 5.7 which was along a crack between the cliff and a railroad trestle (and I finally fell once) in Substation wall..
- 2008-06-22: Exit 38 again; this time Farside, specifically Squishy Bell. After getting lost trying to find it, we did (ie, Maggie-lead, me-top-rope, Maggie-top-rope) a 5.5, a 5.6, and a 5.8 (the hardest Maggie's ever lead).
- 2008-06-26: A bunch of V1s, some attempts at V2s.
- 2008-07-01: A bunch of new problems (all the V0s, a few V1s, and a V2!)
- 2008-07-03: Some new V1s, two V1+s in the chamber that I hadn't gotten before, valiant efforts on some V2s.
- 2008-07-09: Worked on two V2s for a while, but then pulled a muscle in my left leg.
- 2008-07-15: They finally put up new problems in the chamber; did all the new V0s and all but one V1, including this crazy fun V1+ with all sorts of wacky positions (but not that hard). The last V1 was this big traverse thing with enormous juggy holds, but not too many of them... maybe next time.
- 2008-07-18: Did all the new V0s and V1s in the chamber (including the one I was blocked on last time), and my first new V2 in ages.
- 2008-07-20: A quick visit, but I did two new V2s!
- 2008-07-23: Made steady progress on a bunch of V2s and tough V1s; redid an old V2.
- 2008-07-25: Lots of new problems in the main area! Did 7 new V0s and 6 new V1s.
- 2008-08-05: Wasted a lot of time relacing my shoe after a lace broke, but did two new V2s!
- 2008-08-10: Did my first V3! And a few new V2s and V1s.
- 2008-08-12: Did three V2s and a bunch of V1s without too much trouble, though other V2s I couldn't even start.
- 2008-08-14: Did a few V2s and V1s, and redid the V3 for good measure.
- 2008-09-07: Clearly a little out of shape... managed some new V1s and V0s, but got stuck on an overhangy V0.
- 2008-09-10: Did all the new V0s and all but one of the new V1s.
- 2008-09-14: Did some V1 and V0s. The gym is big but the bouldering area was surprisingly unpopular, and really tough to read the problems while colorblind.
- 2008-09-25: Did a few V0s and a V2, but my hand hurts from smashing it on my desk.
- 2008-09-30: Did three new V2s and spent some time on a V3.
- 2008-10-07: For once, I started with V2s and worked my way down; only got one new one, but probably better than trying the hard ones while tired.
- 2008-10-11: New: a V2 (tricky strength move!), a bunch of V1s and V0s.
- 2008-10-14: One new V2, a bunch of V1s and V0s.
- 2008-10-17: Got a V3! And some V2s, etc.
- 2008-10-19: Somewhat frustrating day; even a V0 (overhangy, at least) was tough today. I did get pretty far on the Tarzany V2 that's been blocking me (got to the last hold!) and did the first move or two on some V3s.
- 2008-10-22: Tried an early-morning climbing go. Got a tough overhangy V1 but still flailed on the Tarzan V2.
- 2008-10-24: Made some inroads on a few V3s.
- 2008-11-06: Did all the new V1s, a new V2, and most of a few more V2s.
- 2008-11-11: Hacked away at some tough V2s, and finished a relatively easy V2.
- 2008-11-18: Top-roping, for the first time in five months, with Kelsey and Ben. Before my best was one 5.10a, once... today I did a 5.10a and a 5.10b on the first try! (Then I struggled with a 5.9 and messed up my wrist on a 5.10a.)
- 2008-11-20: Did a new V2, but my arms were killing me and couldn't stick around too long.
- 2008-11-23: OK, their bouldering area really is that awesome. Pretty inconvenient to get to, though. And toughly graded, or maybe I'm just weak this week. Did one or two V2s and a top-out V1, and another handful of V1s and V0s.
